Why Winter Is the Best Time to Start Laser Hair Removal
https://www.milaser.co.uk/book-onlineEvery May, our phone gets busy with the same request: “Can I be hair-free for my holiday in July?” The honest answer is that it's tight. Laser hair removal is a
course, not a quick fix. The clients who are smooth by summer are almost always the ones who started in the autumn or winter.
Here's why November to January is the ideal time to begin, and what your timeline looks like if you start now.
1. Laser works best on untanned skin
Laser targets melanin, the pigment in your hair. When your skin is tanned, it holds more pigment too. That makes treatment less comfortable and raises the risk of irritation or pigment changes. A recent tan can mean we have to lower settings or postpone your session.
In winter, most of us aren't tanning. You can come to every appointment on schedule, and your practitioner can use the most effective settings for your skin.
The Soprano Ice Platinum we use is suitable for all skin types, including darker skin. Even so, avoiding fresh sun exposure around each session gives everyone the best result.
2. Your course fits neatly between now and summer
Laser only treats hairs in their active growth phase. That's why you need around 6 to 8 sessions, spaced roughly 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area. Start in November and a typical plan looks like this:
November: free consultation, patch test and session 1
December / January: session 2. Hair grows back finer and patchier.
February: session 3. Many clients notice a clear reduction by now.
March: session 4
April / May: session 5. Shaving becomes occasional.
May / June: session 6. You're ready for summer.
Start in May instead, and that same course runs well into winter, through the months you most want smooth skin.
3. Aftercare is easier when you're covered up
After a session, it's normal to have mild redness for a few hours. You'll also need to protect the treated area from the sun and skip hot tubs and saunas for a short time. In winter, long sleeves, tights and trousers make all of this simple. There are no beach plans to work around.
4. Fewer clashes with holidays and events
Summer brings holidays, weddings and festivals, and a missed session sets your course back. Winter diaries are usually calmer, which makes it easier to keep a consistent 4 to 8 week rhythm. Consistency is one of the biggest factors in your final result.
5. Courses offer the best value
Since you'll need several sessions, a course is the smartest way to pay. At MI Laser & Aesthetics, a course of 6 is 60% off the single-session price. Six underarm sessions cost £192 and six full-leg sessions cost £576. See our laser hair removal cost guide for every area.
How to prepare for your first winter session
Avoid waxing, plucking and epilators for about 4 weeks beforehand, because laser needs the hair root in place.
Shave the area the day before your appointment.
Skip fake tan and sunbeds before treatment.
Tell us about medication and any recent changes to your health at your consultation.
Wear SPF 30+ on treated areas exposed to daylight, even in winter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start laser hair removal in December?
Yes. December is an excellent time to start, and you'll still finish most of your course before summer.
What if I go on a winter sun holiday?
Tell us before you book. We'll plan your sessions around the trip so you're not treated on freshly tanned skin.
Does laser hurt more in cold weather?
No. The temperature outside doesn't change how the treatment feels. The Soprano Ice Platinum cools your skin continuously during treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions for a long-lasting reduction. Hormonal areas like the face may need a few more.
